title: plateformes

When starting (1.8)sec.records, I planed on focusing the music on minimal sound art, and electroecustic music. Since starting the label it has taken a life of it's own pulling me increasingly towards something that falls somewhere between improvisational free jazz and the above mentioned genres. I am thankful for this, otherwise I may not have gotten the chance to experience and release 'plateformes'. The trio of Hervé Boghossian, Stéphane Rives, and Matthieu Saladin is very much a free improvisational jazz group, but the music they output goes way beyond what you could expect from the instrumentation. Delicate, but with an incredible power pulling, pushing, and then releasing the listener. Not power in noise or volume, but a power that is coming from the players utilizing the physics of there instruments, and the sound they produce. Through techniques of circular breathing, bass clarinet feedback, and guitar feedback you'd be hard pressed to pin any one sound on a particular instrument. I'm very excited about this release. Enjoy this album, and make every effort to catch this trio in performance.

Stéphane RIVES soprano saxophone

Born 1969, near Paris. More than 20 years of music. Autodidact saxophonist preoccupied by the contemporary evolution of instrumental sound, Stéphane Rives sees his instrument in a concrete acoustic sound perspective. In that sens, he participates to collective projects (Klac-Sons, Ivraie), organises concerts with musicians from the parisian scene (Frédéric Blondy, Bertrand Denzler) and meet different artists from electronic and electroacoustic music : Guido Hübner and Samuel Loviton from the band Das Synthetische Mischgewebe, Laurence Bouckaert from the " les Phonogénistes ", Fred Nogray, Otomo Yoshihide and Bob Ostertag in a one nite big grouping, and also Pascal Battus. He likes to work on long term relation and with the slow maturing required by any experimental approached . That's why he forms a duo with vocalist Agnès Palier, which is documented on the cd " Oxymore ". He is also the dedicator and interpret of " Nunavut ", a piece for soprano saxophone and tape (made from multiphonic sounds and other treatments), composed by Fabrice Guédy (IRCAM), in collaboration with Vincent Fromont (INA). He plays in quartet with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Bertand Denzler and Marc Baron, in trio with Sharif Sehnaoui and Edward Perraud, in duo with Christine Sehnaoui and also with Quentin Dubost. He sometimes directs workshops (Bordeaux, Paris and Montreuil).

Matthieu Saladin

Bio :

Born in 1978, Matthieu Saladin graduated in philosophy, music and visual arts. He is currently a PhD student in musical aesthetics at the University of Paris 1 - Sorbonne. His research is about experimental music and more precisely contemporary free improvisation. He published several articles on this subject and was a speaker at several international conferences. As musician, his plays bass clarinet, soprano saxophone and electronics. He is a member of the electroacoustic band Archipel since 2000 with Vania de Bie-Vernet and Stéphane Vigny. Since 2003, he develops a solo research registered in the improvisation and which the first record, Intervalles, will release in 2006 on the Slovene label, L'innomable. This work consists of an electronic introspection of the soprano saxophone and bass clarinet. It is a matter of exploiting at the same time the accentuation of acoustic specificities and the range of each instrument via various relatively simple treatments (equalisation, fragmentation, delay, panoramic) and the amplification of many details. A new work in progress is interested more precisely in only one play on the depth in the extreme low range of the bass clarinet. In 2004, he forms the Plateformes trio together with Hervé Boghossian (electric guitar) and Stéphane Rives (soprano saxophone). He plays there the amplified bass clarinet, generating a feedback in the low ones which he modulates and deteriorates by a play on the pitch, the pressure and the breath.
